PM Abiy leads tree planting activity with PM Office staff, emphasizes national renewal
Addis Ababa, July 8, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed continued Ethiopia’s annual national planting initiative this morning by participating in a tree planting activity alongside staff of the Office of the Prime Minister.
The initiative, which forms part of the government’s broader Green Legacy campaign, reflects the administration’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and national renewal.
“Renewal through planting,” the Prime Minister remarked in a brief statement, underscoring the symbolic and practical importance of reforestation efforts in addressing climate challenges and restoring degraded landscapes across the country.
Launched in 2019, Ethiopia’s Green Legacy initiative aims to plant billions of seedlings annually, contributing to food security, watershed protection, and green job creation. This year, the country plans to plant over 7.5 billion seedlings, which would bring the total number planted since the initiative’s launch to more than 47.5 billion, with a goal of reaching 54 billion by next year.
