PM Abiy meets with artists from across all regions to discuss culture and creativity

Addis Ababa, June 15, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed convened a high-level discussion today with representatives from the arts community drawn from all regions of the country, as part of a continued national dialogue on the role of the arts in Ethiopia’s development.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized in a social media post that the arts are integral to a nation’s identity and progress.

“They preserve cultural heritage, promote social cohesion, and give voice to the diversity of our communities,” he remarked.

Beyond their cultural significance, the arts contribute directly to the economy by driving innovation, boosting tourism, and creating employment opportunities, he noted.

He further highlighted the role of arts education in nurturing creativity and critical thinking among citizens.

“The arts are not merely a form of expression,” PM Abiy underscored. “They are a pillar of national strength and unity.”

He described today’s engagement as part of a broader, multi-level dialogue that has been underway to assess the challenges and opportunities facing Ethiopia’s creative sector.

The session focused on synthesizing insights gathered from previous discussions in order to identify issues requiring policy-level attention, while also highlighting areas where artists themselves are expected to take proactive leadership.
