PM Abiy Praises Benishangul-Gumuz Progress, Highlights Gold Mining Potential
Addis Ababa, August 23, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed lauded the rapid development underway in Benishangul-Gumuz regional state, noting significant improvements in Assosa and the emergence of major mining projects that he described as vital to Ethiopia’s prosperity.
Abiy, who visited the region today, said the transformation observed in Assosa compared to last year reflects tangible progress. “The progress made is a good start, with a clear corridor impact already visible,” he stated.
The Prime Minister highlighted the Kumruk gold factory, located some 100 kilometers from Assosa, as a flagship project. Describing it as a modern, automated facility, he emphasized that half of its production capacity will come online next year, signaling the vast gold potential of the region.
“The fast-paced progress since our last visit is commendable, and once the project is fully completed, its impact will extend across the entire region,” Abiy said.
He underscored that such projects represent solid building blocks for national prosperity, stressing that mining remains one of Ethiopia’s priority sectors within its multidimensional development strategy. “The Benishangul-Gumuz region is proving to be a vital contributor to this vision,” he added.
