PM Abiy calls for collective commitment to peace, development, and national interest
Addis Ababa, October 28, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on all Ethiopians and political forces to uphold peace and national responsibility, stressing that the country’s future depends on dialogue, unity, and development.

Addressing members of the House of People’s Representatives today, the Prime Minister emphasized that every nation has its own national interests and threats, underscoring that Ethiopia’s national interest has been suppressed for generations.
“Ethiopians must distinguish national interests from the conspiracies of adversaries. Ethiopia’s foes know the country’s capacity and potential,” he said.
He noted that peaceful power transition remains the only sustainable path for Ethiopia’s stability, adding that political differences must be resolved through dialogue and consensus.
PM Abiy pointed out that several competitive and opposition parties have chosen peaceful engagement and are now participating in the country’s political and economic system, with some leaders currently serving within government structures.
Those aligning with Ethiopia’s historic adversaries, he warned, were acting as mercenaries against their own country. “They can only truly serve the people they claim to represent through peaceful and lawful means,” the Prime Minister said.
Speaking on the peace situation in the Tigray region, the Premier reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the Pretoria Peace Agreement and to ensuring sustainable development in the region. “We do not want further fighting in the Tigray region. Instead, we want to develop the country together. Any attempt to overthrow the government by force will never succeed,” he stated.
The Prime Minister recalled the core principles of the Pretoria Agreement, including the dissolution of illegitimate regional structures, the establishment of an inclusive interim administration, the respect for the federal system, disarmament and rehabilitation of armed groups, the restoration of essential services, and the return of displaced citizens.
He further emphasized that only the federal government holds the constitutional authority to engage in foreign relations.
PM Abiy reiterated that the government remains open to all forms of peaceful and ideological engagement aimed at resolving differences. “The government will continue to counter ideology with ideology and work together to build a stronger and more united Ethiopia,” he concluded.
