President Taye: Digital Innovation Driving Ethiopia’s Health System Transformation
Addis Ababa, November 10, 2025 (FMC) — President Taye Atske Selassie has affirmed that Ethiopia’s ongoing health system modernization efforts are delivering tangible results, underscoring the nation’s progress toward a more efficient, equitable, and technology-driven healthcare service.
The President made the remarks today at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa during the official launch of two new digital platforms developed by the Ministry of Health to enhance public access to healthcare services.
The first, Teninete, is a mobile application designed to improve the supply chain and accessibility of medicines and general health services. The second, Lebbego, is a free 952 hotline providing ambulance dispatch, health counseling, and immediate medical information.
President Taye said the introduction of these homegrown technologies demonstrates the positive outcomes of Ethiopia’s health modernization initiatives. “These innovative digital tools will empower citizens to receive timely, equitable, and quality healthcare,” he stated, adding that they reflect the nation’s growing capacity for indigenous digital solutions.
He further highlighted that technology plays a vital role in bridging the critical stages of illness, recovery, and healing—ensuring that healthcare delivery continues to advance across the country. The government, he reaffirmed, remains fully committed to sustaining and scaling such transformative initiatives.
Minister of Health Dr. Mekdes Daba, for her part, emphasized that technology is now central to making healthcare more accessible, efficient, and responsive. She explained that the platforms launched today are part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to reform and modernize health service delivery.
Dr. Mekdes noted that the concept for the Teninete app originated from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s vision to make essential medicines readily available to all citizens. She added that the Lebbego ambulance and hotline system will play a crucial role in improving emergency response and real-time medical support nationwide.
“These platforms mark a key milestone in our journey to transform Ethiopia’s entire health system,” the Minister said.
