Prez. Taye calls on ERCS to bolster capacity for independent humanitarian response

Addis Ababa, July 8, 2025 (FMC) — President Taye Astke Selassie has called on the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) to enhance its institutional capacity to effectively fulfill its mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering through timely and impactful humanitarian and development interventions.

Speaking at the 90th anniversary celebration of the ERCS held today at the Addis International Convention Center, the President—who also serves as Patron of the Society—praised the ERCS as a symbol of compassion and solidarity founded in times of adversity.

He extended appreciation on behalf of the Ethiopian government and people, acknowledging the Society’s decades of service in delivering humanitarian assistance. He also paid tribute to ERCS members who have made profound sacrifices in defense of the nation’s sovereignty during times of national crisis.

In a context where global humanitarian aid is diminishing, the President emphasized the importance of building sustainable and self-reliant humanitarian capacity. “As we strive for national food security and innovation-driven self-sufficiency, it must be regarded as a sovereign responsibility to assist our vulnerable communities using our own resources,” he asserted.

ERCS President Abera Tola echoed the President’s message, noting the government’s continued support for strengthening the Society’s capabilities. He outlined ERCS’s ambitious goal to grow its membership base to 20 million within the next decade and to fully finance its operations through domestic support.

“Our strategic vision is that by 2035, the ERCS will operate sustainably and emerge as a regional leader in humanitarian assistance—capable of supporting fellow Red Cross and Red Crescent societies across Africa,” Abera stated.

Simone Casabianca-Aeschlimann, Head of Delegation for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ethiopia, lauded the ERCS for its 90 years of dedicated service, marked by courage and resilience in responding to conflict, violence, and natural disasters.

“The ERCS has stood resolute in both peace and peril, achieving remarkable progress under immense pressure,” she said. “These achievements are etched not only in the legacy of the organization but in the lives of millions whose suffering was eased by its presence.”

She further highlighted the longstanding partnership between the ERCS and the ICRC, which dates back to 1935. “This shared journey, though challenging, has been deeply rewarding—anchored in a relationship built on mutual commitment and enduring trust,” she remarked, also recognizing the dedication of ERCS leadership, staff, and thousands of volunteers.

“This anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but a call to greater purpose and strengthened resolve,” Simone concluded.

The event was attended by former ERCS patrons, including former Presidents Mulatu Teshome and Sahle-Work Zewdie, senior government officials, and members of the diplomatic community.
