Prime Minister Abiy extends condolences on the passing of historian Prof. Lapiso Gedelebo

Addis Ababa, November 9, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has expressed his sadness over the passing of veteran Ethiopian historian Professor Lapiso Gedelebo, who died today at the age of 87 after a long illness.

In a message shared on his social media pages, the Prime Minister said he was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of the distinguished historian, noting Professor Lapiso’s immense contribution to Ethiopia’s historical research and scholarship.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the late scholar’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh also conveyed his condolences, describing Professor Lapiso as “the father of Ethiopian history” whose works greatly enriched the study of Ethiopia’s past.

He highlighted the scholar’s far-reaching contributions to historical research and publication, both in Ethiopia and across Africa, and recalled his lifelong dedication to documenting the country’s heritage and identity.

Both leaders praised Professor Lapiso’s enduring legacy as an eminent historian who advanced knowledge, inspired generations, and strengthened the nation’s collective understanding of its history.
