Regional domestic revenue mobilization workshop underway in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, March 11, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia is hosting regional domestic revenue mobilization workshop in Addis Ababa themed ‘’Enhancing Domestic Resource Mobilization to Support Development Goals’’
The workshop is being held from 11 to 14 March 2025, according to the Ministry of Revenues.
At the opening session of the workshop Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance for Ethiopia Mr Ahmed Shide highlighted that the Ethiopian government is exerting its utmost effort to strengthen the fiscal capacity of the nation which plays a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable development.
Domestic revenue is the heart of achieving the nation’s development aspirations like education, healthcare, infrastructure social protection, among other, as stated by the Finance Minister.
To accomplish those efforts, the government has implemented various initiatives, including tax reform. To this end, the National Tax Reform Task Force has been established and the Council of Ministers has approved the National Medium Term Revenue Strategy which directs domestic revenue mobilization efforts while accounting for economic growth and tax system’s distributed impacts, Mr. Ahmed noted.
Minister of Revenues Ms. Aynalem Nigussie, on her part, said that Ethiopia’s tax system is key for financing government development plan and public services. Over the years the government rolled out various reforms to advance revenue collection and tax administration services, with a goal of achieving fiscal sustainability. The country’s revenue mobilization recorded improvement owing to the reforms implemented.
The minister called on the stakeholders “to share not only what has gone well, but also the challenges we’ve encountered. And together we can uncover the key principles that should guide our revenue strategies and find ways to advance our efforts in generating more domestic resources for development.”
Present at the ongoing workshop, among others, include representatives of the eight East Africa Revenue officials, iInternational Monetary Fund (IMF) Ms. Clara Miara, AFE Director, state ministers of revenues, Ethiopian Customs Commissioner Mr. Debele Kabeta and other Revenue Tax Administrations Tax Policy Experts, among others.
