Renowned Pan-Africanist P.L.O. Lumumba Hails Ethiopia as Pillar of African Unity and Pan-African Legacy

Addis Ababa, December 6, 2025 (FMC) — Renowned Pan-Africanist Professor Patrick Lumumba praised Ethiopia for its historical and ongoing role in Pan-Africanism, describing the country as a central pillar of African unity and continental collaboration.

Speaking exclusively to Fana Media Corporation during the African Media Awards in Addis Ababa, Lumumba highlighted Ethiopia’s symbolic and practical significance.

He noted that the country, from its resistance at the Battle of Adwa to hosting the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, has consistently been at the forefront of efforts to unite the continent.

Lumumba emphasized that Ethiopia’s legacy in Pan-Africanism provides both inspiration and a foundation for contemporary initiatives across Africa.

He said that the city of Addis Ababa has become a hub for continental dialogue, hosting representatives from more than 40 African countries during the awards, and he expressed hope that all 55 African nations would participate in future events.

The Pan-Africanist stressed that the ideals of Pan-Africanism must translate into practical action. He called on African youth to embrace courage, humility, and integrity while contributing to economic, cultural, and technological development.

Lumumba said that Africa’s future depends on informed, principled leadership grounded in both historical knowledge and contemporary innovation.

Highlighting the role of media, Lumumba noted that journalists and broadcasters have a crucial responsibility to tell African stories authentically, preserve cultural and historical heritage, and connect communities across the continent.

He urged media professionals to report responsibly, focusing on innovation, entrepreneurship, social development, and governance, while reinforcing a shared African identity.

Lumumba’s remarks underscored Ethiopia’s enduring status as a beacon of Pan-Africanism, illustrating how historical legacy and contemporary leadership can combine to guide the continent toward unity, development, and self-determination.
