Shabelley Resort Inaugurated as Ethiopia Advances National Tourism and Development Agenda

Addis Ababa, January 31, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia today officially inaugurated the Shabelley Resort, a flagship development project under the government’s Dine for Generations initiative.

The resort spans 385 hectares and is designed as a large-scale tourism and leisure destination aimed at fostering community interaction while showcasing Ethiopia’s natural and cultural heritage.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister, the facility includes three restaurants with a combined capacity of 400 guests, a dedicated cultural venue, high-tech meeting halls, children’s play areas, and shaded pedestrian walkways extending over 15.4 kilometers.

The project also features a Fruit Park containing 10,000 trees and a Camel Park intended to reflect Ethiopia’s traditional and ecological diversity. A total of 51 accommodation units have been completed, alongside world-class hospitality facilities.

The government said the inauguration of Shabelley Resort marks a milestone in Ethiopia’s efforts to position itself as a leading tourist destination in Africa, while advancing sustainable tourism development.

The project is also described as reflecting the Medemer philosophy, which emphasizes transforming the country’s natural and cultural endowments into shared national assets with global appeal.
