“The Medemer State” Advocates Rational, Forward-Looking Solutions for Ethiopia, Scholars Say

Addis Ababa, September 17, 2025 (FMC) – Scholars reviewing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s latest book, The Medemer State, have praised it for moving beyond historical constraints and emphasizing a reasoned, pragmatic approach to Ethiopia’s pressing challenges.

The book, the fourth authored by Prime Minister Abiy on the Medemer ideology, was officially launched yesterday in a ceremony attended by President Taye Atsekeselas, senior government officials, high-ranking military officers, and representatives from diverse sectors of society.

Addis Ababa University philosophy scholar Dagnachew Assefa, who presented a critical review of the book, highlighted that it not only offers a thorough ideological analysis but also proposes practical solutions for Ethiopia’s contemporary problems.

“The book advocates comprehensive strategies grounded in a nuanced understanding of each challenge, moving beyond rigid ideologies that follow a single prescribed path,” Dagnachew said. “The Medemer State clearly diagnoses Ethiopia’s current situation and provides guidance for the country’s future trajectory.”

He emphasized that the book’s reason-based approach invites rational debate and includes detailed proposals to strengthen peace, social cohesion, and cooperation among citizens.

Political analyst Zerihun Teshome echoed these views, noting that the book reflects thoughtfully on Ethiopia’s past without being constrained by outdated ideas.

“It addresses present-day challenges with careful deliberation and underscores the need to confront obstacles seriously to build a better tomorrow,” Zerihun said.

Scholars observing the launch highlighted that The Medemer State embodies a philosophy rooted in unity, rationality, and forward-looking governance, offering Ethiopia a framework to advance national development, cohesion, and long-term stability.
