Three-Day Special Campaign Launched to Expand National ID Coverage
Addis Ababa, October 24, 2025 (FMC) – A three-day special registration campaign for Ethiopia’s national digital ID, the National ID Program (Fayda), was launched today nationwide.
Mr. Henok Tilahun, Director of Registrations at the National ID Program, told Fana Media Corporation that the campaign aims to register a large number of citizens, with a particular focus on the education sector. The initiative targets students from primary schools to universities, as well as the broader educational community.
“The special registration campaign will continue until Sunday and is designed to ensure that students and educational staff can easily access the national ID service,” Mr. Henok said. He emphasized that the national ID is increasingly integrated into public and private services, making it essential for citizens to obtain their identification.
Registration services will be available in all regions and city administrations this weekend, including today, specifically for individuals who were unable to register during regular working days. In addition to Ethio Telecom and Ethiopian Postal Service (Ethiopost) centers, registration will also take place on school premises.
Mr. Henok highlighted that over 26.7 million citizens have received their national IDs nationwide so far, and the program aims to register 40 million people by the end of the 2025/26 fiscal year.
He called on the community, particularly the educational sector, to take advantage of the campaign over the coming days. Teachers and school leaders are encouraged to coordinate with students to ensure maximum participation.
The National ID Program (Fayda) is Ethiopia’s digital identification system that provides residents with a unique, secure ID number linked to biometric data. It aims to improve access to public services, financial inclusion, social protection, and governance, and is a central part of the country’s Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy.
