Tourism and infrastructure projects in Bale Zone exemplify government’s drive for sustainable dev’t: PM Abiy
Addis Ababa, October 18, 2025 (FMC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has underscored the close connection between Ethiopia’s natural treasures and its development agenda, emphasizing the Bale Zone as a model of how tourism, infrastructure, and environmental stewardship can advance sustainable growth.
The Prime Minister arrived in the Bale Zone on Friday, accompanied by First Lady Zinash Tayachew and a high-level delegation of current and former leadership, to review ongoing developments in the Bale Mountains National Park, including the under-construction Dinsho Lodge, its surrounding environment, and the Gese Grasslands, according to the Office of the Prime Minister.
In a message shared this morning on his official social media pages, the Prime Minister noted that the Bale Mountains National Park, with its remarkable diversity, remains one of the cornerstones of Ethiopia’s tourism pillar. He said this potential is being strengthened by the completion of the Dinsho Lodge, located at the heart of the park, and the nearby Sof Omer Luxury Lodge, which is nearing completion.
According to the Prime Minister, the Sof Omer Lodge is aligned with Ethiopia’s Ten-Year Strategic Plan and is designed to position tourism as a key driver of economic growth. The facility will enhance visitor experiences at the Sof Omer Cave by offering premium accommodation and leisure services, supported by the Sof Omer Cave Development Project.
He also highlighted the importance of the Robe–Goro–Sof Omer–Ginir Junction Road Upgrading Project, which connects the highly productive agricultural zones of East Bale and Bale with central Ethiopia. Built to high standards with dual asphalt concrete layers, the 29-kilometer project includes five bridges and is vital for improving accessibility and facilitating travel between major attractions such as Sof Omer Cave and Bale Mountains National Park.
The day concluded with a review of the Weib River Flood Control Project, aimed at regulating water flow inside the Sof Omer Cave to ensure year-round accessibility while protecting its ecosystem.
Prime Minister Abiy stated that these initiatives collectively demonstrate the government’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, linking natural wonders with modern infrastructure to promote tourism, protect ecosystems, and strengthen local economies.
