Twin Earthquakes Measuring Up to 5.6 Strike Near Mekelle, Northern Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, October 11, 2025 (FMC) — A series of moderate earthquakes struck northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region on Saturday evening, according to data released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremors, recorded about 56 kilometers northeast of Mekelle, measured 5.2 and 5.6 on the Richter scale. The USGS reported that the quakes were felt across several areas in both the Tigray and Afar regions.

The seismic event occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

The affected area lies within the Great East African Rift Valley system, a zone known for its recurring tectonic activity and history of earthquakes.
