Ethiopian Airlines Looking to New Destinations, Innovations and Global Partnerships: Group CEO
Addis Ababa, May 14, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew said the airline is looking ahead to expanding to new destinations, advancing innovation, and strengthening global partnerships as it marks its 80th anniversary.
The remarks were made during a Global Cultural Day and Static Airshow event hosted by Ethiopian Airlines at Ethiopian Skylight Hotel, which brought together senior government officials, diplomats, customers, and members of the international community.
Mesfin noted that the event also brought together senior officials, diplomats, and members of the diplomatic community, reflecting the airline’s global reach and long-standing international partnerships.
He said Ethiopian Airlines has been a pioneer in introducing modern aviation technologies and advanced aircraft, stressing that its fleet has remained the cornerstone of its growth and long-term development.
He further indicated that the fleet reflects both the airline’s historical journey and its future direction, particularly in the context of the continued expansion of the global aviation sector.
He added that aircraft and global aviation systems continue to play a central role in creating opportunities and strengthening connectivity between countries.
The Group CEO said the airline has evolved into a globally prominent carrier that connects people and nations while supporting tourism and cultural exchange across continents.
He also noted that the Global Cultural Day was designed not only to showcase cultural diversity but also to reinforce unity in diversity among the various communities the airline serves worldwide.
Mesfin further stated that Ethiopian Airlines currently transports more than 21 million passengers annually and operates a fleet of 147 aircraft serving 140 destinations across more than 80 countries on five continents.
He also indicated that the airline has placed orders for more than 100 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, which are expected to be delivered between now and 2032.
He further emphasized that the airline’s modern fleet has been a key driver of its success, contributing to its position as one of the most successful carriers in Africa, and described this achievement as part of a legacy built over many years.
Mesfin added that the airline remains focused on expanding to new destinations, advancing innovation, and strengthening partnerships across the world.
Speaking at the same occasion, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, described Ethiopian Airlines as a symbol of African aviation excellence, resilience, vision, and national pride.
He said the establishment of Ethiopian Airlines shortly after the founding of the United Nations adds historical significance to its long-standing legacy.
The minister noted that Ethiopian Airlines has consistently served as a bridge between Africa and the rest of the world by facilitating tourism, diplomacy, cultural exchange, and trade.
He further stated that the airline’s growth demonstrates what Africa can achieve through visionary leadership and sustained investment in strategic sectors.
Alemu also indicated that the transport sector remains central to Ethiopia’s development agenda and described Ethiopian Airlines as a strategic pillar of the national economy and a key driver of continental connectivity.
He added that the cultural celebration reflected global friendship, while the static airshow demonstrated the airline’s operational strength and continued progress.
The minister further called for increased focus on greener energy transitions and stronger African integration through the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The event featured cultural performances showcasing the diversity of communities served by Ethiopian Airlines, alongside a static airshow displaying various aircraft models currently in operation.
