Ethiopia, China commit to deepen judicial cooperation to support reform and modernization

Addis Ababa, May 13, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia and China have agreed to strengthen judicial cooperation as part of broader efforts to modernize legal systems and enhance bilateral relations.

President of the Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia, Mr. Tewodros Mihret, is leading a high-level delegation on a week-long working visit to the People’s Republic of China, which began on May 10, 2025.

On May 13, Mr. Tewodros held productive discussions in Beijing with Mr. Zhang Jun, President of the Supreme People’s Court of China.

According to information obtained by Fana Media Corporation from the Ethiopian Embassy in Beijing, the talks focused on deepening institutional ties and supporting Ethiopia’s judicial reform agenda through cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Mr. Tewodros outlined Ethiopia’s ongoing reforms aimed at building a modern, accessible, and transparent judicial system. He emphasized the importance of the visit in reinforcing mutual understanding, strengthening consensus, and identifying future areas of cooperation.

He also highlighted Ethiopia’s progress in digitalizing court services and improving access to justice as part of the country’s broader reform efforts.

Meanwhile, Mr. Zhang Jun welcomed the Ethiopian delegation and recalled that this year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and China.

The Chinese official underlined that, under the leadership of both countries, bilateral cooperation—particularly in the judicial sector—has continued to grow.

He expressed confidence that Ethiopia’s reform efforts will benefit from enhanced judicial collaboration and the exchange of best practices.

The two sides agreed to continue exchanging visits and develop multifaceted cooperation frameworks to support the judiciary’s role in upholding the rule of law and delivering justice.

The agreement is expected to further deepen the all-weather strategic partnership between the two countries, the Embassy told FMC.
