Ethiopian and South African karate federations sign bilateral cooperation agreement
Addis Ababa, August 4, 2025 (FMC) – The Ethiopian Karate Federation (EKF) has signed a bilateral agreement with Karate South Africa aimed at strengthening cooperation in refereeing, coaching, competition organization, and technical exchange.
EKF President Mr. Muluneh Gosaye said the agreement marks a turning point for Ethiopia’s engagement in the sport, which has so far lacked international visibility and participation. He noted that despite being a registered member of various karate organizations, Ethiopia has not taken part in major continental or global events due to limited experience and unmet prerequisites.
“With the new leadership in place, our Federation is now focused on building capacity, reforming the sport, and raising Ethiopia’s flag in international competitions,” Mr. Muluneh stated. “This agreement demonstrates our commitment to change, learn from best practices, and create pathways for our athletes to excel.”
He added that the partnership with South Africa—where national karate tournaments are held up to eight times a year—will help Ethiopian athletes gain exposure, attract public interest, and turn the sport into a viable income-generating sector.
The agreement was signed by Mr. Muluneh Gosaye and Mr. Sonny Pillay, President of Karate South Africa and Vice President of the African Karate Federation.
Mr. Pillay emphasized that karate is widely practiced across both rural and urban areas of Africa and has produced athletes who compete at the global level. However, he said Ethiopia must invest in communication, branding, and structural organization to fully tap into the sport’s potential.
“The foundation of any sport is built on structure, leadership, and policy,” Mr. Pillay remarked. “Ethiopia’s karate community must be guided by a clear vision and effective governance if it is to thrive.”
The new partnership has already yielded results, with Ethiopia receiving an invitation to participate in the upcoming East African Karate Championship—part of its growing cooperation with Karate South Africa, the Commonwealth African Karate Federation, and the African Karate Confederation.
