UEFA Threatens Boycott of FIFA Competitions Over World Cup Investment Plan

Addis Ababa, July 30, 2026 (FMC) — Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, and its 55 member associations have unanimously agreed to boycott all FIFA competitions, including future FIFA World Cups, if FIFA proceeds with a controversial plan to sell a stake in a new commercial subsidiary to private investors.

The decision follows an emergency virtual meeting convened by UEFA after FIFA unveiled a proposal to establish a commercial entity, valued at around US$20 billion, to oversee the World Cup and other FIFA competitions. Under the plan, FIFA would retain control while offering a minority stake to external investors to raise billions of dollars for the global game.

In a strongly worded statement, UEFA said football’s premier international tournaments should never be treated as commercial assets, arguing that the World Cup represents a shared global sporting heritage rather than an investment opportunity. The European governing body also criticized FIFA for developing the proposal without sufficient consultation with its member associations.

UEFA warned that European national teams will not participate in FIFA competitions if the commercialization plan moves forward, describing the proposal as a threat to the integrity and long-term interests of world football.

The dispute marks one of the most significant governance confrontations between UEFA and FIFA in recent years and has also drawn concern from other football stakeholders, including the Asian Football Confederation, over FIFA’s decision-making process.

FIFA has defended the proposal, saying the investment would generate additional funding to support football development worldwide while allowing the governing body to retain overall control of its competitions.
