DPM Temesgen says Ethiopia’s railways can become self-sufficient, connect Africa
Addis Ababa, August 22, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia now has a unique opportunity to build a self-sufficient railway system that restores national pride and contributes to the broader vision of connecting Africa, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said today.
Speaking on social media, Temesgen described the revival of the railway as a key step in transforming past setbacks into future prosperity. “Under a new vision, this critical national resource is being revitalized,” he said. “Transportation services, workshops, and repair operations are now moving forward, guided by the principle of uncovering hidden resources.”
He reflected on the railway’s historic significance, noting that Ethiopia was among Africa’s first countries to introduce modern rail services. However, repeated policy reversals with each change of government had left the sector lagging behind despite its early potential.
Temesgen cited the Dire Dawa–Dewele line as a concrete example of progress. Operated by the city of Dire Dawa, the line now runs twice weekly, generating profit by returning long-idle trains to service and mobilizing previously dispersed workers. Expansion plans are underway, with the federal government pledging support to strengthen these achievements.
He emphasized that with determination and unity, Ethiopia can establish a self-sufficient railway system that not only strengthens national pride but also positions the country as a central player in Africa-wide rail connectivity.
