Ethiopia’s Agriculture Reaches New Heights with 1.3 Billion Quintals Harvest in 2025/26 Fiscal Year

Addis Ababa, July 19, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s agriculture sector has reached a new milestone, with the country harvesting 1.3 billion quintals of agricultural produce during the 2025/26 fiscal year, Minister of Agriculture Addisu Arega said.

The East African country’s Ministry of Agriculture and heads of relevant institutions reviewed the implementation of the sector’s annual plan, highlighting major achievements recorded in crop production, agricultural exports, input supply, mechanization, and livestock development.

Presenting the sector’s performance, Addisu said significant progress was registered during the fiscal year, with 29 million hectares of land cultivated and 1.3 billion quintals of produce harvested.

He noted that 13 million hectares of land were cultivated through cluster farming, saying the approach has created greater potential to improve productivity and enhance the efficiency of agricultural production.

The minister further stated that the agricultural sector generated 4.55 billion US dollars in export revenue during the fiscal year, with coffee contributing 3.1 billion dollars of the total earnings.

He said the government provided 84 billion birr in subsidies to improve farmers’ access to agricultural inputs, particularly fertilizer, while taking corrective measures to address challenges and irregularities in the supply system.

Addisu also highlighted growing progress in agricultural mechanization, noting that demand for modern farming technologies and their benefits has continued to increase.

In the livestock sector, he said more than 4.9 million animals underwent artificial insemination through the “Bounty of the Basket” initiative, contributing to efforts to improve livestock productivity.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s ongoing Green Legacy Initiative tree-planting campaign aims to mobilize more than 20 million people during the current main rainy season. Officially launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed last month, the campaign targets the planting of more than 8 billion tree seedlings this year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture’s Public Relations and Communications Executive Yimer Dawud, who spoke to Fana Digital.
