Massive Landslide Kills Over 1,000 in Sudan’s Darfur Region
Addis Ababa, September 2, 2025 (FMC) — A massive landslide has killed more than 1,000 people in Sudan’s Darfur region, according to local rebel authorities.
The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) said the disaster struck on August 31 in the village of Tarasin, located in the Marrah Mountains of central Darfur, after several days of heavy rainfall. The group reported that the village was completely destroyed, with only one person surviving.
The SLM/A has appealed to the United Nations and international aid organizations to assist in recovering the bodies and providing humanitarian support to the affected community.
The Marrah Mountains have long been under the control of the rebel group and host thousands of displaced civilians fleeing Sudan’s ongoing conflict. Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
According to reports, the latest disaster adds to the suffering in Darfur, where millions are facing displacement, famine, and escalating violence.
