Ethiopia Reaffirms Commitment to Regional and Global Peace in UNSC Meeting

Addis Ababa, October 17, 2025 (FMC) – Minister of Foreign Affairs Gedion Timothewos held discussions with members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) visiting Addis Ababa for the Annual Informal Joint Seminar with the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), taking place from 13–17 October 2025.

The meeting focused on exchanges of views on pressing regional and global peace and security issues. Minister Gedion emphasized Ethiopia’s strong support for the UNSC’s central role in promoting global stability. In turn, Council members recognized Ethiopia’s longstanding contributions to both regional and international peace efforts.

The dialogue highlighted the importance of enhanced international cooperation to address conflict situations in Africa and beyond. Permanent representatives of the Council briefed Minister Gedion on their joint work with the AU Peace and Security Council.

Both sides engaged in an in-depth discussion on ensuring complementarity and effective coordination between the UNSC and the AUPSC. Minister Gedion reaffirmed Ethiopia’s continued commitment, including through its membership in the AUPSC, to actively promote stability across the region.

Notably, Addis Ababa has a historical connection with the Security Council, having hosted the only UNSC meeting conducted outside New York on January 28, 1972, during its 1672nd session.
