PM Abiy Ahmed Urges Africa to Shape Global Order Through Economic Sovereignty, Homegrown Solutions and Collective Resilience

Addis Ababa, October 24, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has called on African countries to move beyond adapting to a changing global order and take a more active role in shaping it, emphasizing economic sovereignty, homegrown solutions and deeper continental cooperation as foundations for lasting peace and shared prosperity.

In a social media post following his participation in the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa in Bahir Dar, where he delivered remarks, Abiy said decisions taken far beyond Africa’s borders increasingly affect the lives of its citizens, economic prospects and security.

While acknowledging that not every external shock can be controlled, the Prime Minister stressed that African nations can strengthen their resilience by building on their own capacities, developing solutions grounded in local realities and working more closely together.

The forum, held under the theme “Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation,” provided a platform for examining how the continent can reinforce its capacity to respond to external pressures while asserting a stronger role in global affairs.

Turning to Ethiopia’s pursuit of peace, Abiy emphasized the need to protect civilians, uphold the constitutional order and preserve opportunities for dialogue. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the National Dialogue, saying Ethiopia remains ready to welcome all those who choose the path of peace.

The Prime Minister also invoked the philosophy of Medemer, which emphasizes bringing together different capacities to achieve shared goals and developing solutions rooted in Ethiopia’s own circumstances.

He said this approach could help build a more resilient, peaceful and prosperous Africa, with greater capacity to shape the global environment inherited by future generations.
