Ethiopia reaffirms commitment to regional prosperity through water, energy, and sea access cooperation

Addis Ababa, October 27, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia has reiterated its unwavering commitment to harnessing its rivers and natural resources for the shared prosperity of the region, while advancing efforts to secure access to the sea in line with its national interests, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh stated on Monday.

Speaking during the opening of the Second Ethiopia Water and Energy Week held at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa, Deputy PM Temesgen highlighted Ethiopia’s determination to ensure that sustainable water and energy development continues to drive both domestic progress and regional integration.

He described the weeklong event as “a celebration of progress, partnership, and innovation” in Ethiopia’s journey toward sustainable growth — emphasizing that the country has achieved remarkable milestones in expanding access to clean water and electricity for millions of citizens.

Mr. Temesgen noted that Ethiopia is steadily evolving into a regional energy hub, exporting renewable power to neighboring countries and promoting economic interdependence through affordable and sustainable energy solutions.

He also underscored that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) remains a “beacon of Ethiopia’s vision for a brighter future — a light for Africa, a symbol of unity, and a testament to cooperation among Nile Basin nations.”

On the broader regional front, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed that Ethiopia’s pursuit of sea access forms an essential part of its strategy to deepen economic integration and strengthen collective growth across the Horn of Africa.

Deputy PM Temesgen concluded by affirming that the sustainable development of water and energy resources — anchored in cooperation, innovation, and mutual trust — forms the foundation of a shared regional destiny.
