Ethiopia Set to Be Confirmed as Host of COP32 in 2027 Following Broad International Endorsement

Addis Ababa, November 11, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia is set to be confirmed on Tuesday as host of the 2027 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32), following broad international endorsement and a decisive show of support at COP30, currently underway in Belém, Brazil.

According to COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago, participating countries agreed in principle to hold the 2027 conference in Addis Ababa on the opening day of this year’s gathering, and formal adoption is expected without opposition.

The development marks a major diplomatic milestone for Ethiopia, which launched its bid in September, competing with Nigeria.

The Bureau of African Countries advanced Ethiopia as the continental candidate after unanimous agreement, paving the way for global acceptance. Diplomats quoted by international media also noted they see no foreseeable objections to Ethiopia’s confirmation.

The decision aligns with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent remarks at the 2nd Africa Climate Summit held in Addis Ababa last September, where he publicly announced Ethiopia’s bid to host the conference and extended an invitation to the world to visit the country should the bid be successful.

The anticipated confirmation means that invitation will now become a reality, as Ethiopia prepares to welcome global leaders, climate negotiators, civil society representatives and environmental experts in 2027.

Ethiopia’s anticipated hosting comes at a time when the decision for COP31 remains unresolved. Australia and Turkey continue to compete for the 2026 summit, with Australia submitting its bid jointly with Pacific Island nations.

The matter has remained stalled within the Western Europe and Others Group for months. COP30 officials have urged member states to resolve the impasse, warning that if no agreement is reached, the conference may default to Bonn, Germany, where the UNFCCC secretariat is based.

Hosting COP32 will place Ethiopia at the forefront of global climate negotiations and provide a platform for Africa to influence future climate action. The event also highlights Ethiopia’s growing climate leadership and aligns with the government’s environmental and diplomatic priorities.

Under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia has achieved major progress through reforestation, forest development, renewable energy generation, environmental rehabilitation and climate-resilient development efforts.

Large-scale initiatives such as the Green Legacy campaign, sustainable watershed projects, and renewable energy expansion have earned recognition in global climate forums.

These efforts have also contributed to Ethiopia’s positioning as a strong voice advocating climate justice and equitable climate finance for climate-vulnerable nations.

Formal confirmation of Ethiopia as COP32 host is expected during proceedings at COP30.
