PM Abiy Calls for Next Decade of Compact with Africa 2.0 to Promote Shared Prosperity Globally

Addis Ababa, November 23, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called on the G20 and international partners to strengthen African integration through trade, cross-border infrastructure, and digital connectivity, emphasizing that these measures are key to driving investment, economic growth, and shared prosperity across the continent.

The Ethiopian leader made the remarks during the Compact with Africa (CwA) side session on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The session focused on reviewing the progress of the initiative and outlining priorities for its next phase, dubbed “Compact with Africa 2.0.”

In his remarks to participants, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted that the Compact’s transformative idea is simple yet powerful: when African nations commit to reforms and international partners provide capital, technology, and expertise, new development pathways emerge.

“Eight years after the Compact launch, the results speak for themselves,” he said, noting that decisive reforms across Compact countries have strengthened macroeconomic stability, opened economies to investment, and restored confidence.

Turning to Ethiopia, the Prime Minister detailed the country’s historic reforms, including modernization of the macroeconomic framework, liberalization of the foreign exchange regime, reforms in monetary and financial systems, expanded financial inclusion, and opening of telecom markets.

Additional measures included restructuring state-owned enterprises, improving trade facilitation, promoting renewable energy investment, and strengthening regulatory frameworks for long-term finance and capital markets, the Ethiopian Premier asserted.

He emphasized that these reforms, though politically demanding, have laid the foundation for a modern, resilient economy capable of attracting long-term private investment and enhancing competitiveness.

“These are not abstract achievements. They form the foundation of a resilient economy that can drive enterprise, job creation, and sustainable growth,” Prime Minister Abiy said.

He underscored that Africa’s economic rise is already evident in cities, farms, factories, and digital ecosystems, stressing that reforms must drive investment, and investment must drive shared prosperity.

Looking forward, the Ethiopian leader urged the G20 to match ambition with action through genuine partnership.

He called for a strengthened Compact with Africa 2.0 Trust Fund, expanded guarantees and blended finance to unlock private capital, timely and effective debt relief under the Common Framework, deeper capital markets, improved credit ratings, and full support for African integration — from the African Continental Free Trade Area to cross-border infrastructure and digital connectivity.

Concluding his remarks, Prime Minister Abiy stressed that the next decade of the Compact must be even more ambitious, with CwA 2.0 serving as a platform for Africa’s growth and global shared prosperity.
