Government holds national session to coordinate COP32 preparatory tasks

Addis Ababa, November 27, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s National Steering Committee convened on Thursday to align on key tasks ahead of the country’s preparations for COP32.

The meeting was held in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and focused on coordinating the Government’s efforts to ensure an inclusive and well-organized process as Ethiopia begins its responsibilities in hosting the global climate conference.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister, the session reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to a coordinated approach, bringing together national authorities and relevant stakeholders to advance preparations for the 32nd UN Climate Change Conference.

Today’s session comes following the yesterday’s announcement of the appointment of Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos as President‑Designate of COP32.

In his new role, Gedion will lead preparations for the summit, coordinating with national authorities, UNFCCC bodies, and international partners.

Following Ethiopia’s endorsement at the recent edition of COP in Brazil, the Government expressed gratitude to all UNFCCC member states for entrusting Ethiopia with hosting duties and said it looks forward to working with the global climate community under Gedion’s stewardship.

Ethiopia was officially announced as the host of COP32 during the COP30 closing plenary this month in Belém, Brazil. The summit will take place in Addis Ababa in November 2027, returning the world’s largest annual climate gathering to Africa.

The country highlighted its strong infrastructure, international connectivity, and national climate initiatives, including the Green Legacy reforestation program and renewable energy projects, as it prepares to host over 60,000 delegates from governments, multilateral organizations, civil society, academia, youth groups, and the private sector.
