Ethiopia’s security and intelligence agencies begin preparations for peaceful 7th national election

Addis Ababa, December 16, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopian security and intelligence institutions have commenced preparations to ensure that the country’s seventh national election is conducted peacefully and democratically, Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebre-Michael said on Monday.

The announcement was made during the launch of a book titled “Election Security and the Role of Security Agencies”, authored by Amhara Regional Police Chief Commissioner Zelalem Mengiste (PhD). The event was attended by the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, General Abebaw Tadesse, senior government officials, religious leaders, and invited guests.

In his remarks, Commissioner General Demelash highlighted the reforms implemented across Ethiopia’s security agencies, describing them as enabling security institutions to serve the public in a free, humane, and professional manner. He noted that these institutions played a pivotal role in ensuring that the sixth national election was held peacefully, democratically, and inclusively.

Commissioner General Demelash added that preparations are now underway to replicate and enhance this performance for the upcoming seventh national election. He said the newly published book would serve as a practical guide for security personnel, supporting them in fulfilling their responsibilities during the electoral process.

Last week, the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) confirmed that the 7th National General Election is scheduled for June 1, 2026, underscoring the Board’s commitment to a well-managed and participatory electoral process.
