Indian PM Narendra Modi Says Ethiopia Sets Example in Unity, Development and Independence

Addis Ababa, December 17, 2025 (FMC) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday praised Ethiopia’s leadership, development vision and historic legacy, saying the country’s values of dignity, independence and self-reliance serve as an inspiration for the Global South.

Modi made the remarks at a grand State Banquet hosted in his honor by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at the Addis International Convention Center, following a day of high-level engagements that included a grand welcoming ceremony, bilateral talks at the National Palace and the exchange of cooperation agreements.

“This is my first visit to Ethiopia, and from the moment I set foot here, I have been touched by the extraordinary warmth and affection of the Ethiopian people,” Modi said, recalling that Prime Minister Abiy personally received him upon arrival and accompanied him to the Friendship Park and Museum.

The banquet came after the two leaders held extensive bilateral discussions with their respective delegations, during which they agreed to elevate the long-standing Ethiopia–India relationship to a strategic level and deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.

Addressing the banquet, Prime Minister Modi said Ethiopia’s traditions of dignity, independence and self-respect carry particular significance at a time when global attention is increasingly focused on the Global South.

“At this critical juncture, Ethiopia’s values serve as a powerful source of inspiration for all of us,” he said.

Modi also commended Prime Minister Abiy’s leadership and development philosophy, including the Medemer (synergy) vision, noting Ethiopia’s efforts in inclusive development, environmental protection and national unity.

“The manner in which Prime Minister Abiy is guiding Ethiopia on the path of prosperity stands as an example for the world,” he said.

During the event, the Indian Prime Minister was conferred the Nishan of Ethiopia, the country’s highest national honor. Modi described the recognition as a profound honor and said he accepted it “with humility and gratitude” on behalf of the people of India.

“To be honored by one of the world’s most ancient and rich civilizations is a matter of immense pride,” he said.

He added that the award symbolized the contributions of generations of Indians — including traders, soldiers, teachers and entrepreneurs — as well as Ethiopians who have nurtured the bilateral relationship through trust and goodwill.

“This honor equally belongs to every Ethiopian citizen who placed their faith in India and enriched this relationship,” Modi said.

The Indian leader also expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Abiy’s invitation to visit Ethiopia, recalling their recent meeting on the sidelines of an international summit, which he said led to the visit being realized without delay.

Looking ahead, Modi said India seeks to further strengthen cooperation with Ethiopia through partnerships based on vision and trust, addressing global challenges while creating new opportunities.

“The future belongs to partnerships built on vision and trust,” he said, reaffirming India’s commitment to deepening its engagement with Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Modi concluded by extending best wishes to the Ethiopian people on behalf of India, underscoring the importance his country attaches to its long-standing relations with Ethiopia.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Abiy also conferred his Indian counterpart with Ethiopia’s highest award, the ‘Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia’ in recognition of PM Modi’s commitment to the Global South and his contributions towards strengthening India – Ethiopia friendship.
