Addis Ababa Records 13 Billion Birr in Volunteer Contributions Over Six Months

Addis Ababa, January 26, 2026 (FMC) — Addis Ababa City Administration has recorded 13 billion birr worth of volunteer contributions from development partners and the public over the past six months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year, Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced.

The Mayor made the remarks while presiding over the city’s six-month performance review of government and ruling party activities for the 2018 Ethiopian budget year (2025/26), conducted in recent days under the theme “Working Hard to Bring Addis Ababa to Greater Success!”

According to Mayor Adanech, the review highlighted encouraging progress in efforts to make Addis Ababa cleaner, greener, and more livable, while improving its transformation into a modern and convenient city for residents.

She reported that during the review period, 134 kilometers of new roads were constructed, while more than 573 kilometers of existing roads were rehabilitated.

In the water and sanitation sector, the Mayor said the city’s water supply capacity was increased by 60,000 cubic meters, while construction of eight filtration facilities is progressing rapidly to modernize the sewerage system and protect the city from pollution.

Mayor Adanech also noted that 274 projects are currently under construction across education, health, and other social sectors, in response to the growing needs of the population.

She stated that extensive corridor development and riverside rehabilitation works are underway, contributing to urban renewal efforts that are reshaping the city. As part of these initiatives, 12,000 residential and commercial housing units have been constructed and handed over to beneficiaries.

The Mayor further reported significant growth in conference tourism, with more than 150 conferences hosted in the city over the past six months.

In terms of employment, she said the city’s job creation efforts have resulted in permanent employment for more than 195,000 citizens, in addition to temporary job opportunities for many others.

Addressing service delivery, Mayor Adanech noted substantial improvement in public satisfaction, particularly through the ‘Mesob’ One-Stop Service, which has achieved a 94 percent public satisfaction rate, citing it as a strong foundation for future reforms.

She also highlighted the rise in public participation, noting that volunteer engagement reached 13 billion birr in value, reflecting strong collaboration between residents and development partners.

Looking ahead to the next six months, the Mayor said consensus has been reached to address leadership performance gaps, strengthen institutional capacity, and combat corruption and malpractice through modern systems and public engagement.

She added that the review forum also reaffirmed commitments to modernize information management systems, strengthen revenue collection, and reduce the cost-of-living burden on residents.
