African Union and the U.S. Commit to Infrastructure, Investment and Peace Efforts

Addis Ababa, January 28, 2026 (FMC) — The African Union Commission received a high-level U.S. delegation led by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, joined by AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson, to strengthen strategic cooperation on infrastructure, investment, and regional security.

The AU Commission emphasized that the visit comes amid complex regional and global challenges, highlighting the importance of close coordination with the United States. The discussions reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to a strategic partnership with the U.S., built on mutual respect, shared interests, and a common dedication to peace, stability, and prosperity.

Both sides welcomed strengthened cooperation on strategic infrastructure and investment, noting progress achieved through AU–U.S. technical working groups and sustained engagement with key AU Commission departments.

In this context, they announced the launch of the U.S.–AU Strategic Infrastructure and Investment Working Group, aimed at mobilizing high-quality, trade-enabling infrastructure, unlocking private sector investment, and advancing continental priorities under Agenda 2063, the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The discussions also covered cooperation in health, peace, and security, including African-led initiatives in the Great Lakes region and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Both parties expressed appreciation for the U.S.’s complementary support.

Regarding Sudan, they voiced deep concern over the ongoing conflict and stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access, and the protection of civilians.
