Ethiopia Inaugurates Aysha-II Wind Power Project, Strengthening Technology-Driven Renewable Energy Dev’t

Addis Ababa, January 31, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia officially inaugurated the Aysha-II Wind Power Project today, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to diversify its renewable energy mix.

The project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in the presence of President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh, Kenya’s Intelligence Chief Noordin Mohamed Haji, Ethiopian ministers, federal and regional officials, elders, and residents of the Somali Regional State.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister, the project represents a decisive step toward strengthening stable and reliable energy, a foundational pillar of a technology-driven economy, and demonstrates Ethiopia’s capacity to turn its ambitious energy goals into reality.

The Aysha-II Wind Power Project is expected to contribute significantly to Ethiopia’s renewable energy capacity, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable energy development and broader economic growth.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also inaugurated the Shabelley Resort in the Somali Regional State. The resort, a flagship project under the Dine for Generations initiative, spans 385 hectares and features restaurants, cultural venues, children’s play areas, and scenic walkways. The project aims to promote sustainable tourism, celebrate the heritage of the Somali Region, and position Jigjiga and surrounding areas as a major national and regional tourist destination.
