AU Commission: Spirit of Adwa Victory Continues to Inspire Agenda 2063 Aspirations

Addis Ababa, March 2, 2026 (FMC) — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mohmoud Ali Youssouf hailed the historic Victory of Adwa as a defining affirmation of African sovereignty, dignity and unity.

In a message marking the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa by Ethiopians over the colonial Italian invaders, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stated that the triumph sent a powerful message that Africa would determine its own destiny.

The Chairperson’s message emphasized that the spirit of Adwa continues to inspire the continent’s aspirations under Agenda 2063, noting that contemporary challenges require unity and solidarity.

He reaffirmed that Africa’s strength lies in collective action and shared purpose.

The African Union Commission Chairperson also reiterated AUC’s commitment to peace, continental integration and shared prosperity, underscoring efforts to advance development and stability across Africa.

The 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa is being observed across Ethiopia and the continent as a symbol of resistance and self-determination, highlighting the enduring significance of the historic victory in shaping Africa’s modern aspirations.
