Ethiopia’s Sports Diplomacy and Infrastructure Efforts Yield Results, Says Addis Ababa Mayor

Addis Ababa, March 4, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s international engagement in sports diplomacy and the development of modern sports infrastructure are producing tangible results, according to the Mayor of Addis Ababa City Administration Ms. Adanech Abiebie.

In a social media message posted Wednesday, the mayor stated that Ethiopia’s inclusion in the global athletics calendar and its opportunity to host an international competition in Addis Ababa for the first time represent significant achievements for the country’s sports sector and international relations.

She noted that the athletics meeting scheduled for April 18, 2026, underscores Ethiopia’s growing role in global sports and provides valuable opportunities for athletes and sports professionals.

The mayor extended her congratulations to all individuals and institutions that contributed to securing the event, describing the outcome as a major milestone for Ethiopian athletics and international cooperation.

The development follows a two-day working visit to Ethiopia by Pierce O’Callaghan, Head of Competition Management at World Athletics, last month. During the visit, the World Athletics competitions director assessed local sports facilities and affirmed that Ethiopia possesses sufficient capacity to host international competitions.

He also indicated that additional athletics events could be organized in Ethiopia, highlighting the country’s potential to become a regular venue for global sporting competitions.

Ethiopia’s successful bid to host the World Athletics One Day Meeting reflects its expanding sports diplomacy initiatives and ongoing investments in sports infrastructure aimed at strengthening the country’s position in international athletics.
