Ethiopia’s Digital National ID “Fayda” Enhances Police Operations and Crime Prevention – Federal Police Chief

Addis Ababa, March 12, 2026 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Federal Police say the introduction of the digital national ID system, Fayda, has simplified crime investigation, prevention, and traffic management across the country.

The Federal Police Commission convened a consultative meeting on Fayda, attended by deputy police commissioners from all regional states, officials from the two city administrations, and IT experts.

In his opening remarks, Chief Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael emphasized that police officers must carry out their duties to ensure that all Ethiopians benefit from the digital ID system.

He highlighted that Fayda plays a key role in modernizing police operations and makes it easier to identify criminals. The Chief Commissioner noted that the police referral app and unmanned police service centers are connected to the national digital ID system, allowing tasks previously handled manually to be completed digitally and more efficiently.

“Beyond improving law enforcement, Fayda offers broad benefits for national security and public services,” General Demelash said. He urged police personnel to work toward making the system accessible to the public.

Yodahe Araya-Selassie, Executive Director of Ethiopia’s National ID Program, emphasized the police’s responsibility in ensuring that all citizens can obtain a Fayda ID.

He added that the system will help prevent identity denial and fraud nationwide.

According to Yodahe, about one million people are registering for Fayda each week, bringing the total number of users to 38 million.
