U.S. Says Conducting Rescue Operation Following Military Aircraft Incident in Iraq

Addis Ababa, March 13, 2026 (FMC) — The United States military said it is carrying out a search and rescue operation after one of its aircraft was lost during a mission in western Iraq.

U.S. Central Command said the incident involved two aircraft operating in the same area, with one aircraft going down while the other landed safely. Initial information indicates the incident occurred in what the military described as friendly airspace, and authorities noted there were no indications that the aircraft was brought down by hostile action.

Rescue teams have been deployed to the area to locate and assist personnel who were on board the aircraft, officials said, adding that efforts are ongoing.

According to reports by Reuters, the aircraft involved was a refueling tanker used to support aerial operations by enabling other aircraft to refuel during extended missions.

Officials said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and further details are expected as rescue operations continue and assessments progress.
