PM Abiy Convenes National Steering Committee to Advance Ethiopia’s COP32 Preparations

Addis Ababa, April 17, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has convened the National Steering Committee to advance Ethiopia’s preparations for the 32nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP32) which will be hosted in Addis Ababa in 2027.

As the COP32 host country, Ethiopia has embarked on early preparations through the formal establishment of the National Steering Committee. Key leadership has been brought together to guide the process with clarity and purpose.

The COP32 Presidency has already commenced its initial tasks, laying the foundation for what must be a coordinated and ambitious effort, the Prime Minister confirmed in a social media post after the meeting.

In his message, the Prime Minister stated that he convened the National Steering Committee across sectors to assess progress made so far, identify gaps, and ensure that all efforts remain aligned with the national vision.

He added that the platform serves not only as a space for review, but also for collective direction-setting.

Ethiopia’s selection to host COP32 marks a significant diplomatic milestone, elevating the country’s role in global climate governance while amplifying Africa’s collective voice on key priorities such as climate finance, adaptation, and loss and damage. The summit, to be held in Addis Ababa, is also expected to enhance the nation’s international profile, attract investment and tourism, and further consolidate its position as a major hub for multilateral engagement.

Since securing the right to host COP32, Ethiopia has made steady progress in its preparations, including the establishment of a national steering committee chaired by Abiy Ahmed to oversee the overall organization of the summit. The preparatory process is further being coordinated at the international level by Gedion Timothewos, reflecting ongoing efforts to ensure both logistical readiness and effective diplomatic engagement ahead of the conference.
