PM Abiy Ahmed Witnesses Official Handover of 12 Su-35 Fighter Jets to Ethiopia Under Russia Defence Agreement

Addis Ababa, October 28, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has received the first 12 Su-35 fourth-generation-plus fighter jets from Russia, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced in a social media post, describing the delivery as a major milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities and safeguard national sovereignty.

PM Abiy said the delivery was made in accordance with an earlier agreement between the Ethiopian and Russian governments, adding that Ethiopia would also receive four batteries of Russia’s S-400 air defence system.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for ensuring that the fighter jets were delivered a year ahead of the agreed schedule.

He said Ethiopia’s comprehensive efforts to sustainably ensure peace and security had reached a new milestone, adding that the growing readiness of the Ethiopian defence forces was strengthening the country’s capacity to deter potential aggression.

PM Abiy described the acquisition as a significant enhancement of Ethiopia’s defence capabilities, enabling the country to pursue its security objectives with greater confidence while contributing to regional stability.

He also said the acquisition placed Ethiopia at the forefront of Sub-Saharan African countries in operating Su-35 fighter jets.

The announcement comes as PM Abiy continues his engagement in Russia during the 3rd Russia–Africa Summit, underscoring the defence and security dimension of the longstanding partnership between Ethiopia and Russia.
