Ethiopia Awarded Gold-Level World Athletics Continental Tour Meeting for 2027

Addis Ababa, April 18, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia has secured another major milestone in international athletics, with World Athletics officially announcing that the country will host a Gold-level Continental Tour one-day meeting in 2027.

The announcement was disclosed today by the Ethiopian Athletics Federation following the successful conclusion of the inaugural Addis Ababa Grand Prix held in the capital earlier today.

The decision marks a significant elevation in Ethiopia’s status within the global athletics calendar, moving from the newly introduced Bronze-level meeting to hosting a top-tier Gold-level event within the World Athletics Continental Tour structure.

The Ethiopian Athletics Federation described the development as a major recognition of the country’s growing capacity to stage world-class athletics competitions and its long-standing contribution to global track and field history.

The announcement follows a successful first edition of the Addis Ababa Grand Prix, which brought together elite athletes from multiple continents and was widely viewed as a key test event for expanding Ethiopia’s role in hosting international competitions.

With the new Gold-level meeting scheduled for 2027, Ethiopia is expected to attract an even stronger field of world-leading athletes, further strengthening its position on the global athletics stage and enhancing its profile as a destination for major sporting events.
