EU Commits €1.2 Billion in MoU with AfCFTA to Drive African Integration Agenda
Addis Ababa, April 20, 2026 (FMC) — The European Union has today committed €1.2 billion under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concluded with the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on the opening of the EU–Ethiopia Business Forum in Addis Ababa.
The agreement, signed as part of the opening ceremony, marks a major step toward advancing African economic integration and strengthening cooperation between Africa and Europe.
It represents a political commitment to formalize and reinforce the ongoing partnership supporting the implementation of the AfCFTA—one of the flagship initiatives of the African Union under Agenda 2063.
The MoU is expected to enhance multilateral engagement between the two sides, including through platforms such as the High-Level Dialogue on Economic Integration and Trade.
The commitment also reflects the scale of ongoing collaboration under the Team Europe Initiative supporting African economic integration towards the AfCFTA, a collective effort comprising more than 80 projects with a total value exceeding €1.2 billion.
The initiative brings together the European Commission and eight EU Member States—Denmark, Germany, Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Finland, Portugal, and Sweden—in a coordinated push to accelerate the operationalization of the continental free trade area.
Officials underscore that the AfCFTA, the world’s largest free trade agreement by number of participating countries, is a transformative platform for Africa’s industrialization and trade diversification, now entering a critical implementation phase following the conclusion of key negotiations.
The European Union remains the leading funding partner of the AfCFTA, providing technical and financial support through various programs that have contributed to key negotiations and institutional capacity building.
The partnership is also expected to expand opportunities for European businesses to invest in Africa and support value addition across sectors.
The agreement was concluded alongside the opening of the EU–Ethiopia Business Forum, which has brought together policymakers, investors, and business leaders to explore investment opportunities and deepen economic ties.
