Defense cooperation between Ethiopia and Mozambique set for new momentum

Addis Ababa, April 27, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia and Mozambique have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation following talks between Minister of Defense Aisha Mohammed and Mozambique’s Minister of National Defense Cristóvão Artur Chume.

The two defense ministers held discussions on potential areas of collaboration within the military sector, focusing on ways to further consolidate the longstanding defense relations between the two countries, which date back to 2009.

Central to their deliberations was the proposal to establish a joint committee that would serve as a structured platform for advancing bilateral military cooperation and addressing priority areas of mutual interest.

Both sides noted that enhanced cooperation would contribute to building greater capacity and achieving more effective results in the defense sector within a relatively short period of time.

The online media team of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) informed Fana Digital that the meeting is expected to play a significant role in laying the groundwork for the establishment of the joint committee and in further strengthening future military relations between Ethiopia and Mozambique.

A high-level Mozambican delegation, led by President Daniel Francisco Chapo, is currently on a working visit to Ethiopia, underscoring the broader diplomatic engagement between the two countries and ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
