Ethiopia Restores Diesel Supply to Pre-Disruption Levels Following Middle East Conflict Impact

Addis Ababa, April 29, 2026 (FMC) – The Ethiopian government has announced the full restoration of its daily diesel supply to levels recorded before the recent supply disruption, reaching 9 million liters as of today.

Speaking at a press briefing, Finance Minister Ahmed Shide stated that the development follows disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict, which led to a sharp increase in global fuel prices and strained supply chains.

He noted that during the peak of the disruption, Ethiopia’s daily diesel supply had declined by half to approximately 4.5 million liters.

According to the minister, fuel transportation from Djibouti to Addis Ababa has resumed, with distribution to regional states scheduled to begin tomorrow.

He further stated that while diesel supply was affected, benzine and aviation fuel remained stable throughout the period.

The government has been importing fuel at higher prices through special procurement arrangements in order to cushion the domestic economy from global shocks.

As a result, it is currently covering an additional subsidy cost of around 20 billion birr per month on fuel imports beyond previous spending levels.

The restoration of supply is expected to ease pressure on the transport and logistics sectors, which had been affected by the disruption.
