IGAD Calls for Immediate De-escalation Amid Rising Tensions in Somalia
Addis Ababa, June 4, 2026 (FMC) — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has expressed deep concern over reports of violence in Mogadishu amid heightened political tensions in Somalia, calling for immediate restraint and renewed dialogue among all parties.
In a statement issued this morning, IGAD condemned all acts of violence and urged stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions, and pursue differences through peaceful, inclusive, and constructive engagement.
“At this critical moment, preserving peace, stability, national unity, and the gains made in Somalia’s state-building efforts is of paramount importance. IGAD urges all stakeholders to place the interests of the Somali people first and to pursue peaceful solutions through dialogue and consensus,” said IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu.
The regional bloc emphasized that Somalia, as a founding member of the regional bloc, remains central to peace, security, and development in the Horn of Africa. The organization reaffirmed its solidarity with Somalia and its readiness to support efforts aimed at advancing dialogue, national cohesion, and lasting stability.
