Special Voting Underway for IDPs, Security Personnel Registered in Camps
Addis Ababa, June 9, 2026 (FMC) — Special voting is underway today for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and members of the security forces who registered to vote in designated camps as part of Ethiopia’s ongoing 7th General Election process.
The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) is conducting the special voting exercise for eligible voters who were unable to cast their ballots during the nationwide election held on June 1, 2026.
The board said the exercise is being carried out in accordance with Article 17 of the Electoral, Political Parties Registration and Election’s Code of Conduct Proclamation No. 1162/2019, which authorizes special voting arrangements for citizens unable to participate in the regular polling under exceptional circumstances.
To facilitate the process, NEBE has established special polling stations in camps accommodating internally displaced persons and members of the country’s security forces.
Only voters who were registered in the respective camps during the voter registration period are eligible to participate in today’s voting.
The special voting comes as NEBE continues to finalize the remaining stages of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, including vote counting and result verification from the nationwide polls conducted on June 1, while facilitating voting in areas and for eligible groups that could not participate on the main election day.
Millions of Ethiopians took part in the June 1 polls, with the board expected to announce the final official results upon completion of all electoral processes.
