AU Commission Welcomes Libya’s Landmark Roadmap to End Political Transition

Addis Ababa, June 19, 2026 (FMC) – The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the signing of a landmark political roadmap by Libya’s rival institutions, describing it as a major step toward ending the country’s prolonged transitional period.

The agreement, titled “Document of Principles: Roadmap for Ending the Transitional Period,” was signed on June 16 by the leaders of Libya’s three principal political institutions—the House of Representatives, the Presidential Council and the High Council of State.

In a statement issued on Friday, the AU Commission Chairperson commended the leadership of Aguila Saleh, Mohamed Al-Menfi and Mohamed Takala for demonstrating statesmanship, mutual compromise and a shared commitment to overcoming institutional divisions in the interest of Libya’s national security, financial stability and territorial integrity.

Youssouf described the tripartite agreement as a significant breakthrough in efforts to resolve Libya’s long-running political transition, noting that it builds on recent progress, including an agreement to unify the country’s national budget and the adoption of the National Reconciliation Charter, which was facilitated by the African Union.

The AU Commission reaffirmed its unwavering support for Libya’s authorities and urged all stakeholders to engage constructively and in good faith in implementing the roadmap to help bring the country’s political transition to a close.

The Chairperson said successful implementation of the agreement would advance the aspirations of the Libyan people for a stable, prosperous and democratic state.

Libya has remained politically divided since the 2011 uprising, with competing institutions and rival administrations repeatedly delaying efforts to establish a unified government and hold national elections. The African Union has continued to support Libyan-led reconciliation initiatives aimed at restoring lasting peace and constitutional governance.
