Government, Markets and Communities Must Work Together to Sustain Ethiopia’s Reform Gains — PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, June 23, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said that the sustainability of national reforms depends on coordinated engagement between government, markets, and communities, warning that fragmented efforts could undermine long-term transformation.

Speaking at the “ETHIOPIA DELIVERS” Summit held under the theme “From Reform to Lasting Change,” the Prime Minister framed reform not as a completed achievement but as a continuing test of institutional endurance and collective responsibility.

He noted that the durability of transformation is determined less by initial gains than by the ability of institutions and actors to align their efforts over time and adjust to changing conditions.

Rather than treating reform as a sequence of isolated interventions, he described it as a living process that requires coordination, correction, and sustained commitment across sectors.

He also said the success of reform should ultimately be judged by its capacity to generate productive economic activity, expand employment, and ensure that prosperity is more widely shared.

While acknowledging that reforms have begun to produce visible changes, he cautioned that their benefits have not yet reached all citizens in an equitable manner, underscoring the need for continued effort.

The Prime Minister further emphasized that strengthening institutional capacity is essential to ensuring that reform gains are preserved and translated into long-term national progress.

The “ETHIOPIA DELIVERS” Summit convened senior government officials and stakeholders to assess the trajectory and resilience of Ethiopia’s reform programme across key sectors.
