Ethiopia’s Foreign Policy Finds New Reach and Resonance, PM Abiy Says

Addis Ababa, August 10, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia’s foreign policy is gaining greater reach and resonance as the country advances a broader reform agenda aimed at strengthening its national interests, development partnerships and role in regional and global affairs.

The Prime Minister made the remarks during Episode 2 of his interview with local media OBN, which was aired on Fana Media Corporation (FMC) platforms last night, while reflecting on the country’s political, economic and diplomatic trajectory.

He said Ethiopia’s engagement with the outside world is increasingly being shaped by a clearer focus on national interests, development and mutually beneficial cooperation. The approach, he explained, seeks to ensure that the country’s international relations contribute directly to Ethiopia’s peace, economic transformation and long-term prosperity.

The Prime Minister further highlighted the importance of Ethiopia maintaining constructive relations with countries and institutions across the world, noting that the country’s diplomatic engagement should be anchored in cooperation rather than confrontation.

He said Ethiopia’s growing economic and development initiatives are also creating a stronger foundation for its international engagement, giving the country greater capacity to advance its interests and contribute to regional and global discussions.

According to the Prime Minister, the country’s foreign-policy direction is closely linked to the broader transformation taking place at home. A stronger economy, improved connectivity, expanded investment opportunities and national development ambitions, he suggested, provide Ethiopia with greater leverage and a broader platform from which to engage internationally.

He stressed that Ethiopia’s objective is not merely to expand its diplomatic presence, but to translate its international engagement into tangible benefits for its people while contributing to peace, cooperation and shared development in the region and beyond.

The Prime Minister said Ethiopia will continue pursuing a foreign policy that protects its national interests while remaining open to partnership, dialogue and cooperation with the international community.
