Foreign Diplomats and Envoys Tour Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches and Ongoing Heritage Works
Addis Ababa, July 3, 2026 (FMC) โ Foreign diplomats and envoys based in Addis Ababa are visiting the historic town of Lalibela, touring its world-renowned rock-hewn churches alongside ongoing heritage conservation and infrastructure development works.
The delegation, led by State Minister of Tourism Seleshi Girma, comprises ambassadors and representatives of various countries and international organizations accredited to Ethiopia.
During their visit, the diplomats are touring the iconic rock-hewn churches and other heritage sites in Lalibela, while also observing ongoing conservation and restoration activities under the Lalibela Heritage Sustainable Development Project.
The project focuses on improving visitor infrastructure and undertaking urgent maintenance and preservation works at the historic site.
Officials said that since its implementation, the project has delivered significant conservation and restoration efforts aimed at safeguarding the architectural integrity and cultural value of the site.
So far, six bridges, a 980-meter paved access road, and pedestrian steps have been constructed to facilitate movement within the heritage complex.
In addition, more than 22 dislodged rocks that posed safety risks have been restored, while surrounding vegetation and debris have been cleared to enhance the stability and preservation of the churches.
The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognized in 1978 for their outstanding universal value as one of the worldโs most exceptional examples of medieval rock-cut architecture and a globally significant cultural and spiritual heritage site.
