Government Continues Investing in Roads, Railways, Airports, Digital Networks to Build Connected Ethiopia: DPM Temesgen

Addis Ababa, July 12, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh has reaffirmed the government’s continued commitment to building the country connected through modern infrastructure and united by shared opportunities, highlighting the inauguration of the revitalized Debre Markos King Tekle Haymanot Airport as part of this broader development effort.

Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen shared a social media post following the inauguration ceremony held today in Debre Markos city of East Gojjam Zone, Amhara Region, attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew, Amhara Regional Chief Administrator Arega Kebede, and other senior officials.

In his message, Mr. Temesgen said the government remains committed to investing in the foundations of lasting prosperity across the country, including roads, railways, airports, and digital networks, to ensure Ethiopia becomes more connected and communities across the nation benefit from shared opportunities.

DPM Temesgen described the inauguration of Debre Markos King Tekle Haymanot Airport as a significant moment for the people of Gojjam, saying it opens a new chapter of opportunity, hope, and connectivity.

He recalled that Gojjam has long been one of Ethiopia’s pillars, renowned for its history of heroism, agricultural wealth, resilience, hard work, and patriotism.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Debre Markos had an airport more than six decades ago before it was closed, adding that the people of Gojjam continued to call for its restoration over many years.

He said the completion of the airport project represents the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration and a promise kept, demonstrating that development should reach every corner of Ethiopia and that every community deserves access to the opportunities created by the country’s growth.

DPM Temesgen stated that the new airport will strengthen tourism, expand trade, create jobs, and unlock new economic opportunities for the people of Gojjam and beyond.

He added that the facility will bring families, businesses, and communities closer together while serving as a gateway for greater investment and growth.

He further emphasized that the government will continue advancing infrastructure development, from roads and railways to airports and digital networks, as part of efforts to build a stronger, more connected, and prosperous Ethiopia.

The inauguration of Debre Markos King Tekle Haymanot Airport also marks the completion of Ethiopian Airlines’ earlier plan to expand domestic air connectivity by introducing services to the destination. The national flag carrier had previously announced Debre Markos among new domestic destinations as part of its efforts to broaden its network and improve air access across Ethiopia.

The airport has been upgraded with a 2,400-meter-long and 30-meter-wide runway, enabling it to accommodate passenger and cargo aircraft, including Q400 and B737 planes. The facility is expected to support increased mobility and economic activities in East Gojjam and surrounding areas.
