African Union and UK Discuss Regional Priorities, Sudan and Somalia

Addis Ababa, August 26, 2026 (FMC) — Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf received UK Minister of State for International Development Kirsty McNeill on Wednesday, with the two sides discussing regional development priorities, peace and security, and preparations for the forthcoming AU–UK High-Level Dialogue.

Youssouf welcomed McNeill’s visit, noting that it reflected the longstanding partnership between the United Kingdom and the African Union and their shared commitment to advancing peace, development and multilateral cooperation.

The meeting also focused on preparations for the AU–UK High-Level Dialogue, scheduled to take place in November.

The two sides discussed the situation in Sudan, calling for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities and full respect for international humanitarian law by all parties. They stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict and underscored the need to restore constitutional order through an inclusive, Sudanese-led and civilian-led political process.

They also exchanged views on Somalia, emphasizing the need for predictable and sustainable financing for African Union peace support operations and broader efforts to consolidate peace, security and stability in the country.

McNeill commended the African Union for its diplomatic and peace and security role across the continent and reaffirmed the UK’s support for the AU’s efforts to promote peace, stability, sustainable development and effective multilateral cooperation.
